On the Quasistatic Approximation in the Stokes-darcy Model of Groundwater-surface Water Flows

چکیده
We study the validity of the quasistatic approximation in the fully evolutionary Stokes-Darcy problem for the coupling of groundwater and surface water flows, as well as the dependence of the problem on the specific storage parameter. In the coupled equations that describe the groundwater and surface water flows for an incompressible fluid, the specific storage, S0, represents the volume of water that a fully saturated porous medium will expel (or absorb) per unit volume per unit change in hydraulic head. In confined aquifers, S0 takes values ranging from 10−6 or smaller to 10−2. In this work we analyze the validity of the previously studied quasistatic approximation (setting S0 = 0 in the StokesDarcy equations) by proving that the weak solution of the fully evolutionary Stokes-Darcy problem approaches the weak solution of the quasistatic problem as S0 → 0. We also estimate the rate of convergence.

On Limiting Behavior of Contaminant Transport Models in Coupled Surface and Groundwater Flows
There has been a surge of work on models for coupling surface-water with groundwater flows which is at its core the Stokes-Darcy problem. The resulting (Stokes-Darcy) fluid velocity is important because the flow transports contaminants. The analysis of models including the transport of contaminants has, however, focused on a quasi-static Stokes-Darcy model. Herein we consider the fully evolutio...

Analysis of non-laminar flows in coarse alluvial beds has a wide range of applications in various civil engineering, oil and gas, and geology problems. Darcy equation is not valid to analyze transient and turbulent flows, so non-linear equations should be applied. Non-linear equations are classified into power and binomial equations. Binomial equation is more accurate in a wide range of velocit...

We present an overview of a modern, efficient approach for uncoupling groundwater–surface water flows governed by the fully evolutionary Stokes–Darcy equations. Referred to as non-iterative partitioned methods, these algorithms treat the coupling terms explicitly and at each time level require only one Stokes and one Darcy sub-physics solve, thus taking advantage of existing solvers optimized f...

The most effective simulations of the multi-physics coupling of groundwater to surface water must involve employing the best groundwater codes and the best surface water codes. Partitioned methods, which solve the coupled problem by successively solving the sub-physics problems, have recently been studied for the Stokes-Darcy coupling with convergence established over bounded time intervals (wi...
